The 22nd Annual Senior Art Exhibition displays around 60 pieces from different artists showcasing different forms of art. This exhibit is specifically for artists over the age of 60 and is co-sponsored by the Gerontology Program on-campus and Studio 55 Fine Arts Guild.

According to the event coordinator, Lisa C. Hall, over a hundred pieces are entered with each artist being able to submit up to two pieces and it costs $5 per entry. These pieces are then shown to the judges and if a piece receives a yes from two of the three judges, it is included in the show. Hall feels that even though not every piece is chosen, for the artists “it is a learning experience,” and the artists are encouraged to try again.

One of the artists, Peter Longley, had submitted artwork in the past and this year was his first time having work hung. Longley’s “Awakening Monarchs in Mexico” was chosen.

There are many pieces on sale, including Longley’s. The least expensive is a piece by Patricia Hovis-French called “Pioneer Supper Prep,” which is $45. Charles Summey’s “Day Break on Tablerock Lake” is the most expensive at $3500.

There are four awards given; best of show, three dimensional award, fabric award, and photography award. These awards were given to Judy Ferguson’s “Boxer,” Ernest Lorenc’s “Cyclops,” Jean Rodgers’ “Indian Couple,” and Jacqueline Stoner’s “Reflections” respectively.

The judges are also allowed to enter a piece, labeled “Juror’s Piece,” and choose one piece to be a part of the show that was not chosen previously, labeled “Juror’s Choice.”

The sponsors of this exhibit include the Gerontology Program of Missouri State University, Studio 55 Fine Arts Guild and The National Art Shop.

The Gerontology Program is a part of the Psychology Department and focuses on the study of older people and disorders related to them. They did a lot of work in putting together this event according to Hall. She said that they recruit volunteers handle the reservation of Juanita K Hammons Hall for the Performing Arts, mailing the call for artists, designing the reception invitation, etc.

The Studio 55 Fine Arts Guild is a group of people who participate in visual arts and they welcome people from different mediums of visual art and different skill levels. The National Art Shop is a Springfield based art shop located on South National. This art shop has helped sponsor the art show for several years. This art show has been going for 22 years and was previously coordinated by Bradley Fisher, who has since retired.
